Defining Your Short Film Idea

For homework this weekend I want you to find the focus for your short film.  Each group will turn in their own answers to these questions on Monday.  Take time to think through each of your answers and plan your film.  We will discuss your decisions on Monday as we help to define your project moving forward.  Here is what I want:

1.)  Why are you making this film?  What do you think your strengths and interests are when it comes to filmmaking?  How do you plan on utilizing these to create your project?

2.)  In one honed sentence (each) tell me what each of these things in your script are:

  • Your World
  • Your main character
  • The problem he/she is facing/overcoming during the film
3.)  With those 3 things defined, write a 2 sentence log-line of what your story is.  Here is an example of a 1-sentence log-line for The Fugitive:

After he's wrongly convicted of murdering his wife, a high-powered surgeon escapes custody and hunts down the real killer, a one-armed man.

4.)  Next, outline the beginning, middle, and end of your script.  For each part of the script give me 3 significant plot beats that occur.  By the end, your outline should be like a brief summary of the action of your film.  We will discuss these in class on Monday and see how we could improve your story.  Make sure it is well thought-out because you want to get the best feedback in class that you can.

Remember, think small.  8 minutes isn't a lot of time to tell a story.  You can tell a whole story about someone trying to get into a bathroom if you want, just make it smart.  Don't forget to check netClassroom for the documents we discussed in class to help you refine your idea.
